Deirdre Mills
Deirdre Mills was appointed Director of Greenwich Hospital in February 2023. She is responsible for the organisation's provision of charitable support, including sheltered housing and education, to serving and retired personnel of the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines and their families. She is also the proprietor of the Royal Hospital School in Suffolk.
Deirdre began her career in the British Army and then spent several years abroad, working on HIV and gender issues in sub-Saharan Africa. Upon return, she worked in communications and strategy development and as a consultant to the third sector before taking up a directorship at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, where she led activity within the UK, Ireland and the Nordic Countries. After a further stay in Africa, Deirdre accepted the role of Chief Executive at The Poppy Factory, a charity supporting wounded, injured and sick veterans into meaningful and sustained employment. During her time there, she was elected to the Confederation of Service Charities (Cobseo) Executive Board and Chaired the Cobseo Female Veterans Cluster Group. Deirdre is also a Director of the Forces in Mind Trust.
Jonathan Ball
Jonathan leads the grants team providing block grants and individual funding to the serving and veteran Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary communities, working in close collaboration with Navy Command and partner Naval and other military charities.
Before joining Greenwich Hospital, Jonathan was an Army Chaplain and then served as Chief Executive of RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, leading a series of charity mergers to deliver a combined whole service delivery charity and membership association.
Laura Callanan
Laura is responsible for financial management, audit and legal reporting and leads on information systems. She works closely with a variety of external partners to manage the organisation’s investment portfolio and financial reporting, and with the Greenwich Hospital team to deliver quality management reporting.
Laura joined Greenwich Hospital in 2023 and has experience in both the charitable and commercial sectors
Kate Hygate
Kate joined Greenwich Hospital in 2022 and leads on governance reform, working closely with our colleagues in the Ministry of Defence to modernise Greenwich Hospital's structure. She also works with the rest of the team to ensure our strategy aligns with this work.
Kate started her career as a solicitor and moved into the charity sector in 2012, where she has worked for a number of charities, large and small, in various roles including four years as a consultant with a focus on charity governance.
Michael Cunningham
Michael joined Greenwich Hospital in 2025 and leads the strategic oversight and performance of the organisation's property investment portfolio. He works closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure investment outcomes align with Greenwich Hospital’s long-term objectives.
A Chartered Surveyor, Michael brings extensive experience from the UK real estate fund management sector. His career spans roles at major institutional firms where he has managed large-scale portfolios, as well as co-founding a boutique investment business that served UK pension schemes and Middle Eastern investors.
